Chainsaw Milling Northland
When a large tree comes down, the timber doesn’t have to go to waste. Chainsaw milling is the process of cutting logs into usable slabs and planks on-site, turning what would otherwise be chipped or removed into material that can be used for furniture, benchtops, shelving, and other timber projects. It’s a great option when you have a tree with quality timber that’s worth saving.
Northland has no shortage of trees well-suited to milling. Macrocarpa is a popular choice for its warm colour and workability, and it’s common across rural Northland properties. Puriri, pohutukawa, and other native timbers can also produce beautiful results when milled correctly, though these come with their own considerations around handling and drying.
Arbor Aid can mill timber on-site as part of a tree removal job, or as a standalone service where you already have logs ready to work with. We assess the timber first to check for anything that would affect the milling process or the quality of the finished slabs, including hidden metal, rot, borer damage, or structural cracking. It’s a straightforward assessment but an important one, and it’s something our team handles as a matter of course.
Once milled, the slabs will need time to dry and season before they’re ready to work with. We can advise you on the best approach for storing and drying your timber depending on the species and the intended use.
